Paramount officially scheduled G.I. Joe 2 for an August 10, 2012 release. It's the third movie announced for August 2012 so far, and it's set to open a week after The Bourne Legacy and the Total Recall remake.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opened to $54.7 million on the same August weekend in 2009 on its way to $150.2 million. Add in decent foreign numbers, and its worldwide total exceeded $302 million.

Based on previous reports, it looks like Step Up 3-D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon Chu will be taking over directing responsibilities from Stephen Sommers. While no plot is currently available, Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in the first movie, tweeted earlier that most cast members would not be returning.

"GI JOE 2 News Flash," she wrote. "The only characters to return in the JON CHU directed sequel will be SNAKE EYES, STORM SHADOW, and DUKE…"

G.I. Joe 2's announcement comes on an extra-busy day for Paramount. The studio not only opened Rango nationwide today, it unleashed the latest trailer for Kung Fu Panda 2 and the first look at Puss in Boots this morning. Then the studio released an image of the Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger and new posters for Thor in the afternoon. G.I. Joe 2 is the fourth movie that the studio has scheduled in 2012, and the third in the Summer. They also have Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (March 2), The Dictator (May 11) and the Untitled Star Trek Sequel (June 29) on the calendar.
