Competition Between Rival 'Snow White' Projects Starts Heating Up

You would've thought that one of the two actively developing Snow White projects would've given up by now, but both Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman from director Rupert Sanders and Relativity Media's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (which may get a new title) from director Tarsem Singh have been moving forward with casting and development with eyes towards their respective 2012 release dates. While Universal was slated to release their Snow White film months after Relativity, the studio has just given the film the original June 1st, 2012 release date given to Judd Apatow's next comedy. Uh-oh!

So that means Snow White and the Huntsman is now slated to be released before Relativity's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White hits theaters on June 29th, 2012. It's hard to gauge whether or not Relativity will move up their film in response, but this competition is going to be pretty heated as the films move forward. Singh's film has a cast that boasts Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane while Sanders' has rounded up Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Sam Claflin for his take on the fairytale. In the past only one of two rival films in cases like Armageddon vs. Deep Impact or The Illusionist vs. The Prestige go on to be remembered by audiences, so it will certainly be interesting to see if being first turns out to be the key to victory at the box office.
