"I'm the king of the world!" Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm have officially announced today that James Cameron's Titanic will be re-released in 3D on April 6th, 2012 next year. That release coincides with the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic setting sail (on April 10th, 1912) and will present the film in 3D for the first time ever. Written, directed and produced by Cameron, Titanic is the second-highest grossing movie of all time. It is one of only three films to have received a record 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director; and also launched the careers of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
This long in the works 3D conversion of Titanic (we first mentioned it last year) is being overseen by Cameron and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau, who produced the hit movie. Cameron released a statement with the press release (via ComingSoon) commenting on the upcoming re-release and how excited he is to finally be presenting Titanic "the way it was meant to be seen" - in 3D. Here's what he says:
"There's a whole generation that's never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be Titanic as you've never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."
Glad to see one of my favorite filmmakers throwing around the word "epic", as readers know I like to use that, too! "This new presentation of Paramount's top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio," said Paramount CEO Brad Grey. "We cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of Titanic." This is probably going to be quite a big event and I'm sure there will be many, many fans who will flock to theaters to see this again, just like they did when it was first released in 1997. On top of Titanic coming in 3D in April 2012, we have Star Wars: Episode I coming in 3D on February 10th, 2012. Quite a lot of big 3D conversions coming up next year
