It was another big weekend overseas for The Smurfs, which topped Rise of the Planet of the Apes again for first place, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reached what is probably its last major milestone in its incredible foreign run.
The Smurfs added an estimated $35.3 million from 54 territories. It debuted to $1.5 million in Poland and held decently in Brazil ($3.9 million), Russia ($2.5 million), the United Kingdom ($2.4 million), Mexico ($2.25 million) and France ($2.17 million). Its foreign total reached an impressive $211.4 million, blowing past similar movies like Scooby-Doo, G-Force and the first Alvin and the Chipmunks. Smurfs is just a few days away from topping Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel's $223.5 million total to take the all-time top spot amongst children's movies with CGI stars.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes finished in second place again, dropping 39 percent to an estimated $29.6 million. It scored distributor Fox International's third-biggest opening ever in South Korea ($7 million), hung on to first place in France with $4.3 million and added $3.9 million in the U.K. That brought Apes' foreign tally to $122.7 million, and its worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total passed $250 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 grossed $14.3 million from 60 territories and is estimated to have reached the $900 million mark on Sunday. That makes it just the third movie ever to reach $900 million overseas after Avatar and Titanic. Potter's worldwide total climbed to $1.266 billion, and it has a chance at $1.3 billion before the end of its run.
Captain America: The First Avenger continued plodding along overseas, adding $12 million from 51 markets for a tepid $147 million total. It opened to $3.5 million in France and $2.2 million in Germany; both of which were less than half of what fellow Avenger Thor opened to back in April. At least Captain's fortunes are brighter than those of fellow comic book adaptation Green Lantern, which added $11.4 million to bring its disappointing foreign total to $78.6 million. Lantern had a solid $3.3 million start in Brazil and held first place in Mexico with $2.4 million, but it has yet to pick up the slack overseas after its weak domestic performance.
Cars 2 kept rolling along, adding $10 million for a total of $314.4 million. That pushed its worldwide total to $501.3 million, making it the fifth-straight Pixar movie to pass the half-billion mark.
Further down the chart, Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned another $6.1 million. Its foreign total reached $747 million, eclipsing The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to rank fifth all-time. That all-time foreign list now has two James Cameron movies on top (Avatar and Titanic), followed by three Summer 2011 sequels (Potter, Pirates, Transformers).
