Keira Knightley Considering a 'Romeo and Juliet' Spin-Off Romance

In November of last year we briefly heard about a new project that would have a new twist on the classic tragic romance of Romeo & Juliet. Based on Rebecca Serle's forthcoming novel When You Were Mine (set to be published in May 2012), the film adaptation is going by the title Rosaline as it follows Shakespeare's classic tale from rom the perspective of the normally silent Rosaline, whom Romeo first claims to love from afar before he spots Juliet. The story breaks off and follows Rosaline as she falls in love with Romeo's cousin Benvolio. Now Vulture says Keira Knightley is circling the project, but she's not the only one. Read on!

Apparently Lily Collins, star of Tarsem Singh's untitled Snow White project, is also in the running for the lead role. The project has a lot of great talent behind-the-scenes with a script coming from (500) Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustader and Michael H. Weber, and Grey Gardens helmer Michael Sucsy on board to direct. Fox was also behind Baz Luhrmann's contemporary set adaptation of Romeo + Juliet, so this is somewhat familiar territory. However, this film is different in that it will be set in the sixteenth century, but will employ modern-day speech (which seems kind of weird). Strangely enough, it seems like the film, being produced by Shawn Levy, might be in the can before the book even hits shelves.
