Last month we learned Universal had made up a shortlist of actresses to take one of the female lead roles opposite Tom Cruise for their tentpole sci-fi flick Horizons (formerly known as Oblivion) from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. At the time Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter), Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy), Brit Marling (Another Earth), Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) were in the running, but Variety says the first actress on the list, Ms. Chastain, has landed the role, but one of the other actresses could get the other female role as Cruise's wife.

For those who aren't familiar, the story (in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an earth surface that has been rendered uninhabitable) will have Cruise as a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler - a beautiful woman (Chastain) who crashed in a nearby spacecraft, and together they go on an adventure that forces him to question his world view. This has been quite a year for Chastain with roles in films like The Help, The Tree of Life, The Debt, Coriolanus and Take Shelter. Though sometimes I have a hard time differentiating her from Bryce Dallas Howard (also in The Help), Chastain's talent certainly makes her a standout as an actress.
