Around-the-World Roundup: 'Real Steel' Repeats

Real Steel fended off a strong assault from The Three Musketeers to remain the box office champion overseas. Johnny English Reborn also had another potent weekend, while Cannes Film Festival favorite The Artist charmed its way to the top of the charts in France.

Real Steel added an estimated $23.3 million from 28 territories, which represent 41 percent of the international marketplace. It had solid second weekend showings in Russia ($4.3 million), Mexico ($2.5 million) and Australia ($2.4 million), though it was underwhelming in its United Kingdom debut ($2.2 million). With a $56.6 million foreign total, Real Steel is set to open in France, Brazil and Switzerland next weekend.

After hitting a handful of European markets like Germany and Spain, The Three Musketeers made its most substantial expansion so far and earned an estimated $20.4 million from 40 territories. Including previews, it opened to $3.3 million in Brazil and $2.4 million in the U.K. It also debuted to around $2 million in Italy. Ahead of its U.S. debut on Friday, Musketeers has already earned $49 million overseas.

Even without any major openings, Johnny English Reborn was off just 16 percent to an estimated $17.3 million. It held first place in the U.K. and Germany with $5 million and $2.6 million, respectively. The movie has so far made $85.1 million overseas, and distributor Universal reports that it is outperforming the first Johnny English ($133 million). Johnny English Reborn opens in the U.S., France and Mexico next weekend. 

The Lion King's 3D re-release added $5.2 million from 31 territories for a total of $37.5 million. Across all of its releases, the movie has made $912.3 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign), which is good for 20th on the all-time chart.

Black-and-white silent movie The Artist opened in first place in France with an estimated $3.3 million. Easily one of the most buzzed-about movies at Cannes this year, The Artist is scheduled for limited release in the U.S. on Nov. 23.

Coinciding with its domestic debut, The Thing remake also opened in a handful of overseas markets. Universal is reporting an estimated $1.5 million from the five territories that it is responsible for, including a $590,000 seventh place start in Australia. However, Universal did not provide data from the regions it does not have rights to, so an official weekend number isn't yet available.
