Though the use of a real-time story on the hit Fox series has been warmly received, the slow real-time development of a feature film adaptation of 24 has been a thorn in the side of many fans. Though Billy Ray was tapped in February of 2010 to finally write the feature film script for the adaptation, Fox apparently wasn't a big fan and development seemed to be at a standstill. However, series star Kiefer Sutherland (who plays bad-ass counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer) appeared on "The View" (via EW) who said that the film will see release in 2012. Though he might just be optimistic, as series producer and star, he would know better than us.
Of course, without a new script, confirmed director or official word, it's really hard know if this will actually come to fruition. Sutherland mentioned that Fox has been working with Tony Scott (director of Unstoppable and Man on Fire) to develop the adaptation. However, it remains unclear whehter he would direct the film, or merely produce.
A feature film version of 24 in the hands of Tony Scott sounds pretty enticing. Either way, some of Billy Ray's initial script will remain as Sutherland says "Billy did a fantastic job." We know Fox definitely wants this to happen sooner than later. After all they even thought of crossing over the Die Hard franchise and 24 into one film.
