Last September we learned that Boys Don't Cry director Kimberley Peirce was going to direct an adaptation of Melissa Marr's dark fantasy novel Wicked Lovely. However, someone else is now going to sit in the director's chair as Deadline reports American Psycho helmer Mary Harron has now signed on to direct the adaptation. The story, scripted by Edward Scissorhands writer Caroline Thompson, follows Aislinn, a girl who has always seen faeries but followed her grandmother's rules to ignore them at all costs. Suddenly the faeries are stalking her and she's forced to confront them and their world that she's feared all her life.
Though Aislinn has ignored these faeries, Keenan the Summer King has taken notice of her and is trying to talk to her, asking questions she's afraid to answer. Keenan has been searching for his Summer Queen for nine centuries and now he has his eyes on Aislinn to take the throne whether she likes it or not. Though this sounds like another fantasy series attempting to capture the teen audience of The Twilight Saga, the combination of Thompson's work on the page, and Harron's previous work on American Psycho has me very intrigued. It's also interesting to note that Vince Vaughn, his sister Valerie and Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) are producing the project.
Harron has been relatively quiet on the filmmaking front recently, dabbling mostly in TV, but this could be a big return for her. And if this film is successful, I'm willing to bet we'll see adaptations of the next four books in the series (Ink Exchange, Fragile Eternity, Radiant Shadows and the February release of Darkest Mercy) pushed into development as well. Although this is a darker fairytale, the influx of alternative takes on fairytales including the two competing Snow White projects, may have audiences fatigued sooner than later.
