LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, enjoying a new crest in popularity with "Fast Five," is in talks to join the "G.I. Joe" sequel.
The 2009 original, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," grossed about $300 million at the worldwide box office but reportedly cost $175 million to make.
Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are rebuilding the franchise and bringing in a viper's nest of new characters, which means that many of the players from the original won't be back. (Headliner Channing Tatum, who played Duke in the first movie, is expected to return.)
Johnson has the offer for the role of machine gunner Roadblock, described as "a big guy with a big gun." The film will be directed by John Chu ("Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"). The first one was directed by Stephen Sommers, and also starred Marlon Wayans and Dennis Quaid.
