At the end of last month, there were rumblings from a reliable Broadway source that Anne Hathaway would be joining Hugh Jackman in the forthcoming big screen adaptation of the classic musical Les Miserables, the next project from The King's Speech director Tom Hooper. While confirmation of that casting has yet to come to light, two other names mentioned in the same story are now confirmed to be negotiating to star in the film as well. THR has word that both Russell Crowe and Helena Bonham Carter are in talks to lend their voices to the staple musical set during the 19th century French rebellion. Read on!
Crowe will play Javert, the uncompassionate police inspector who will stop at nothing to recapture Jean Valjean (Jackman), the man who steals bread to feed his sister and spends the ensuing years in prison, and trying to escape it, while also becoming the guardian of a young woman named Cosette. Meanwhile, Carter is playing the greedy wife of Thenardier. Carter has already brought her singing talents to film with Sweeney Todd, but this will be Crowe's first time singing on the big screen, though he has his own collection of music available with his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (now known as The Ordinary Fear of God). Likely more casting decisions we'll be made soon and if that Broadway source stays accurate Hayden Panettiere, Miranda Cosgrove, Lucy Hale, or Emma Watson could be announced as Eponine and Cosette.
