Jeff Bridges Producing and Starring in Adaptation of 'The Giver' Novel

For over a decade now, Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver have been trying to get an adaptation of the young adult novel The Giver into production, but they hit a snag back in 2007 when Warner Bros. ended up picking up the book. But now Variety says the rights have become available again, and now Bridges and Silver are looking to finally get the project off the ground. Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog) is still attached to pen the script, and while Bridges had initially envisioned the project for his father, the late, great actor Lloyd Bridges, it sounds like he'll end up starring in the film himself. The younger Bridges says, "I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges, however, at 61-years-old I feel the time is right for me to do it." The story follows a 12-year-old boy who lives in a futuristic utopian society where all memory of human history has been erased. His life is thrown into turmoil when he is designated to inherit the role of the Giver and bear his community's vast range of human emotions, which causes him to realize that living a pain-free life comes at a high cost. It sounds like this is really a passion project for Bridges, so if he pours all that love into the film, then his waiting will not have been in vain.
