Towards the beginning of the year, we heard a bit of a wild news story that director Clint Eastwood had boarded the long-gestating remake of the 1954 musical A Star is Born ((which itself was a remake of the 1937 film of the same name). The film would team Eastwood with chart-topping singer Beyoncé in the story of a movie star helps a young singer/actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. We've been waiting to hear who might take the male lead, with Will Smith surfacing at one time, but now Deadline hears Leonardo DiCaprio is being courted for the role.
Apparently Eastwood has been sweet-talking DiCaprio while shooting J. Edgar to get the actor on board the musical. The project has been set up at Warner Bros. for a while though with names like Gerard Butler and Russell Crowe being tossed around even before Beyoncé got involved. Honestly, if DiCaprio ended up joining the project, I'd be much more interested, but nothing is official yet. But as it stands, the combination of Eastwood and the aforementioned chart-topping singer just doesn't thrill me anyway. It's a shame a rugged, but musically talented guy like Hugh Jackman couldn't get involved, but he's got a pretty full slate already.
