John Cusack Replacing Tobey Maguire in Lee Daniel's Film 'Paperboy'

Back in May we learned that Precious director Lee Daniels had finally lined up a follow-up to his hard-hitting Oscar nominated drama by taking on an adaptation of The Paperboy. At the time the director had rounded up a cast that included Tobey Maguire, Zac Efron, Sofia Vergara and Matthew McConaughey. However, since then Tobey Maguire has been forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with his work on The Great Gatsby. However, now Variety has word on a solid replacement as John Cusack is stepping up to take the role in this indie drama based on the novel of the same name by Peter Dexter. Read on!

The story follows two brothers, a reporter and a college dropout, teaming up to investigate a possible miscarriage of justice surrounding a death row inmate convicted of killing the local sheriff. Cusack is playing the prisoner, which sounds like a much different role for the actor, though not as out of the ordinary as his playing Edgar Allan Poe. As previously reported, Maguire's departure delayed the production which also caused Vergara to leave the project, but she has since been replaced with Nicole Kidman who will play a woman with a dark side who writes letters to men on death row. Though Precious was a fierce drama, I'm hoping this one is a little less melodramatic.
