We still have a few months before Tomas Alfredson's Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy hits US shores, but the film is already a hit internationally. Already out in the United Kingdom, the movie is both wowing critics and audiences, opening at number one its first week and expected to do the same in it's sophomore weekend. As with any project, success equals potential sequel and those gears are apparently now in motion.
The Guardian recently spoke with star Gary Oldman who said that he would be interested in returning to cinemas as George Smiley, but only with a few conditions. One example is that he wouldn't want to do a sequel without Alfredson. Created by John le Carré, Smiley was the central protagonist in five different novel - including Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy - and played smaller parts in some of the writer's other work. Studio Canal, the production company behind the new movie, is "keen to make Smiley their first franchise," and the paper says that there is expected to be a big announcement in Paris next week.
Considering that Oldman has been since the early 1980s it would be rather funny if this is his big opportunity to be a franchise hero. It would also be fascinating to see how the series would be developed, given that the character has been described as “the anti-Bond.” These films would be more cerebral than action oriented, which is rather unheard of in the history of spy movie franchises.
