In what seems like it could almost be some kind of peculiar prequel to the Ron Howard directed drama Frost/Nixon, actor Cary Elwes, best known for his roles in films like The Princess Bride and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, will make his feature directorial debut with Elvis & Nixon, a film following the interesting visit that iconic musician Elvis Presley paid to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House on December 21st, 1970. THR has word on the film which has Eric Bana (Munich, Funny People) set to play "The King" with Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Edge of Darkness) playing "Tricky Dick." More below!
Apparently Elwes also wrote the screenplay with Joey and Hanala Sagal as the story recounts the meeting between Presley and Nixon which came about after the musician wrote a six-page letter requesting the visit and even suggesting to be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (though I don't think that position meant what Presley though it meant). Upon meeting Nixon, the hip-swinging singer brought some family photos and a Colt 45 pistol which was given to Nixon as a personal gift. It certainly sounds like an interesting meeting, and with actors like Bana and Huston taking on the roles, I'm interested to see what they bring to the table since each of the men has very iconic and constantly exaggerated traits and mannerisms.
