Over two years ago we featured the trailer for a peculiar comic adaptation out of Japan called Big Man Japan. The wacky foreign film follows a story that only Japan could deliver about a down-at-the-heels wrestler whose specialty is fighting giant aliens. Before he faces his monstrous opponents he gets electric jolts that cause him to balloon to huge proportions, though after his bouts he deflates to normal size again. Now Variety reports Columbia Pictures and The Green Hornet producer Neil Moritz at Original Film will team-up for a currently untitled English-language remake of Hitoshi Matsumoto's original film.
Phil Hay and Matt Mandredi, the writers behind last year's Clash of the Titans remake and Aeon Flux will write the script, but that honestly doesn't inspire much confidence. As of now no director or cast is attached, but Matsumoto (who also starred in the original film) will still be involved in some capacity. He says, "With an ordinary remake, you just turn over everything to someone else and do nothing yourself, but this time I'll take part in the remake in some form or other, so I'd like to make something interesting and fun and different from Big Man Japan. The concept sounds like it has the potential for fun, but the talent on the page seems to leave something to be desired.
